National TB Control Programme 

Under this programme, one District TB Centre with trained key personnel for planning, implementation, monitoring and supervision of the programme continued to function at Port Blair. TB WARD in the GB Pant Hospital has 50 beds. In addition, 12-bedded ward at Car Nicobar and 5 bedded ward at Nancowry are also functioning in the territory. Short course chemotherapy is introduced through the islands and the facility is being provided to all the TB patients in this territory. During the period 2002-2003, 4522 sputum examinations conducted, 767 cases we detected and 241 sputum positive cases were also detected upto March 2003. NTBC Programme is implemented through the four Community Health Centres and 19 Primary health Centres in this territory.

The incidence of malaria in this UT shows fluctuating trend and seasonal variations. Out of the 198092 No. of blood slide examined 757 found positive and all of them have been treated for malaria during the year 2002 and the No. of confirmed death is one. Dengue, Japanese Encephalitis and Kala-Azar diseases have not been reported during the last 3 decades in this territory. It is likely that bye-laws to prevent mosquitogenic condition through Municipal Council to maintain high standard sanitation is going to be framed very soon.
