West Bengal Minister to visit islands

 

The Hon’ble Minister in-charge of Housing and Public Health Engineering Departments, Govt. of West Bengal, Shri Gautam Deb is scheduled to arrive here on March 9, 2005, on a four-day visit to the islands.

 

The Minister will be accompanied by the Chairman, Left Front Committee, West Bengal, Shri Biman Bose.

 

During his stay here, the Minister will visit some of the Tsunami affected areas in and around Port Blair and will call on the Lt. Governor. The Minister will also visit Mayabunder and Diglipur.

 

On completion of tour, the Minister will leave for Kolkata from here on March 13, 2005.

 

Solemn function on March 10

 

Tenth March is a significant day in the history of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It was on this day in 1858 that the first batch of the heroes of the 1857 war of Independence numbering 200 were deported to the Islands by the Britishers.

 

This batch landed on the soil of Andamans at Chatham on 10th March 1858 transported by the ship S.S. Semiramis.

 

A solemn function will be organised at 7.30 a.m on 10th March, 2005 at the Martyr’s Column of 1857, Marina Park which will include paying of floral tributes by the Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A&N Islands, senior officers of the Administration and public representatives.

 

MP distributes ex-gratia cheques to next of kin of deceased

 

The Member of Parliament, Shri Manoranjan Bhakta today distributed cheques of Rs. 50,000/- (Rupees Fifty Thousand only) each to the next of kin/legal heirs of the five deceased who had died in the earthquake/tsunami which hit the islands on 26.12.2004 towards the ex-gratia payment. The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (South Andaman), Shri Shailendra Singh Parihar was present on the ocassion:

Contribution to Lt. Governor’s Relief Fund

 

A sum of Rs. 73,086/- has been contributed to the Lt. Governor’s Relief Fund. The amount was raised from charity football match organised by the Directorate of Education, Directorate of Sports, Arts and Culture, Sports Authority of India’s Special Area Games Centre, Port Blair and the A & N Football Association at the Netaji Stadium, Port Blair.
