Administration Clarifies

This is with reference to the news item published in the newspaper Andaman Subah Tak of 2nd May, 2005. The Press release circulated by the Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A & N Islands, at the Press Conference in Kolkata contained the number 3077 as missing and not 377 as reported by the newspaper. The report published by the newspaper is factually incorrect.

Tehelka publishes Administration’s reply

The newspaper Tehelka had published a news story on 16th April, 2005 titled NGOs Pick Patil’s Rs. 3.75 cr Tsunami Bill. The story was subsequently reproduced in some local newspapers. The Administration had since issued a letter to Tehelka denying all the accusations made in the news story point by point basis. Besides clarifying that the Home Minister had no plans to visit Andamans on April 14, it was also pointed out to Tehelka that the A & N Administration had never compelled NGOs to supply various items for relief and rehabilitation work. The NGOs had pledged to donate various items on their own. It was also pointed out to Tehelka that before publishing such stories necessary cross examination should also be done with the Administration about the veracity of the facts.

The Administration’s reply was published by Tehelka in its 23rd April issue.
