His Execellency the President of India arrives to
a warm welcome
His Excellency the President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, was accorded a warm welcome when he arrived at the airport by an Indian Air Force aircraft on a visit to the islands from 5th to 7th May, 2005.
He was received at the airport by the Hon’ble Lt. Governor, Prof. Ram Kapse, Member of Parliament, Shri Manoranjan Bhakta, Chief Secretary, Shri D.S. Negi, Commander-in-Chief Andaman Nicobar Command, Lt. General Aditya Singh, Chairman Port Blair Municipal Council, Shri K. Krishnan, Adhyaksh Zilla Parishad, Shri R. Chidambaram, Municipal Councillors, PRI Members, senior civil and officers of defence.
He was presented guard of honour on arrival at the airport by the armed forces.
The President also visited the National Memorial Cellular Jail and placed a floral wreath at the Martyrs’ Column. Besides visiting cells and galleries at the Memorial complex, he also witnessed the Sound and Light Show.
His Excellency the President of India interacts with students
It was a day for the students of Govt. and Private schools as well as College students with no less a person than His Excellency the President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam at an interaction programme held at the JNRM Auditorium, Port Blair today.
Addressing the gathering of students on the occasion, Dr. Kalam spoke about the importance of creativity in life. He also administered oath to the students for imbibing human values in life, planting of trees for preservation and enrichment of nature, imparting education to others and prevention of addiction.
The students raised queries on development, space and future of the islands. The President while replying to the queries also gave his e-mail address to them.
Sawn timber sales depot at Kadamtala
A sawn timber sales depot at Kadamtala has been opened with effect from 05.05.2005 by the Department of Environment & Forests. Shri Debendre Dalai, DFO, Middle Andaman informed that opening of sales depot was a felt need of the people and would be of benefit to the residents of Kadamtala, Baratang and nearby villages as they would no longer have to purchase sawn timber from Govt. Saw Mills at Chatham and Betapur for the maintenance and construction of their houses. Sawn timber of various sizes will be available at this depot. The villagers can purchase the requirements of sawn timber by placing indents to the Range Officer, Bajalungta Range, Kadamtala.
Stone laying ceremony
Shri K. Krishnan, Chairman, Port Blair Municipal Council will lay the foundation stone of the Community Hall-cum-Commercial Complex at a function to be held at Delanipur, Ward No. 4 on 6th May, 2005 at 4.30 pm.
He will also lay the foundation stone of a Shopping Complex at a function to be held at South Point Junction, Ward No. 16 on 7th May, 2005..
Sailing of MV Swaraj Dweep
The vessel MV Swaraj Dweep is scheduled to sail from Port Blair to Chennai via Car Nicobar, Nancowry and Campbell Bay on 10.05.2005 at 1600 hrs from Haddo Wharf. Cabin tickets for the said voyage against Govt., Administration, SCI, Raj Niwas and Tourist quota will be issued on 07.05.05 between 0900 hrs and 1300 hrs and quota for Defence will be issued on the same day between 1400 hrs and 1700 hrs. Tickets against public quota and cancelled or surrendered, if any, will be issued on 09.05.05 between 0900 hrs and 1300 hrs.
The counter will remain closed on 10.05.2005 for preparation of passenger manifest and summary. Tickets, if any available, will also be issued at PMB Gate No. 1 from 1400 hrs to 1500 hrs on 10.05.2005.
