Message

5th day of June is commemorated as World Environment Day every year the world over. The theme for this year is ‘Green Cities: Plan for the Planet’. I am happy to learn that we have joined the rest of the world in observing this important day in our green islands, where nature is bountiful.

The day holds special significance to the islanders for it reminds them to keep the greenery, unpolluted environment and serenity of the islands intact and do everything possible within their means not to allow their towns to develop the ills of urbanization like slums, pollution, absence of greenery and biodiversity etc. I take this opportunity to caution my beloved Islanders against the ill effects of urbanization such as littering of wastes particularly plastics, which being non-biodegradable is a matter of concern. We must actively discourage use of plastics in our islands. The preponderance of greenery all around us in Andaman & Nicobar should not make us complacent and allow degeneration of urban areas like Port Blair. We should be aware of the fact that trees are the consumers of carbon dioxide, one of the Green House Gases, which are responsible for global warming. We must not forget that global warming if continues unabated, the inhabitants of these island territories will be worst sufferers.

Let us come together to work for clean and green urban areas and be committed to environmentally sustainable way of living. While wishing a meaningful celebration of the World Environment Day, I expect Administration to help people improve their quality of life without compromising that of the future generation.
