Message of Lt. Governor

World Consumer Rights Day is observed all over the world on 15th March every year. A number of programmes are arranged every year to focus attention of citizens on the rights and responsibilities of consumers at large on this occasion. Due to Tsunami disaster, Andaman and Nicobar Administration is not in a position to hold such programmes in this month. The theme of this year’s World Consumer Rights Day is Crusade against Adulteration, Counterfeiting and Spurious Products.

On this occasion it is important to spread the awareness about the protection accorded to every individual by the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 which provides for a legal framework for protection of Consumer’s rights against some of the social crimes like adulteration, spread of spurious products etc. The UT of Andaman and Nicobar Islands has set up a State Commission chaired by a Retired High Court Judge. It has a District Consumer Forum at Port Blair presided over by a District and Sessions Judge. Directorate of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs has published pamphlets and leaflets in vernacular languages, focusing on rights and responsibilities of consumers and on the simple procedures followed for lodging of complaints. I appeal to all residents of these Islands to avail of relief from the redressal fora made available for the purpose. I also call upon elected members of PRI bodies to spread awareness of consumer rights in these islands

 Public requested to conserve power

Owing to paucity of power generating capacity at the departmental power stations in Port Blair, it is not possible to meet the full demand of electric power especially during the evening peak hours due to humid and hot climate. As a result, the department is enforced to exercise unpleasant rotational load shedding in Port Blair city and rural areas of South Andaman Island.

With a view to provide better power supply, the department has shifted five nos. 1000 KW DG sets costing around Rs.10.00 Crore from Rangat Bay Power House and these sets have been installed in the Phoenix Bay Power House. These have been put into trial operation around fortnight back. With the addition of these 5 MW DG sets, the power position has improved and the duration of load shedding has come down from the earlier two and half hours to 45 minutes-one hour during evening peak.

All the consumers of electricity are earnestly requested to extend their whole hearted co-operation in bringing down the peak demand by using electricity with utmost economy. The consumers may keep off their unwanted lights and fans, minimize the use of fridges, air conditioners, heaters and other power intensive appliances during the evening peak hours i.e. from 5 PM to 10 PM.

The commercial establishments and shopkeepers may curtail their consumption by using minimum possible lights and fans and completely stop lighting of their glow signboards etc.

All the Heads of Departments/Offices are also requested to avoid illumination of their office buildings, gardens, parks etc. so that the energy saved could be provided to all areas for a longer duration and will be beneficial for the students who are preparing for their board examinations.
