Tourism Minister meets LG, officials and NGOs

 

The Union Minister of State for Tourism, Smt. Renuka Chowdhury today met the Lt. Governor, Prof. Ram Kapse, Shri D. S. Negi, Chief Secretary, Shri K. Krishnan, Chairman, Port Blair Municipal Council, Secretaries and Officers of the Administration, and representatives of the Non Governmental Organisations. The meeting was held to discuss issues pertaining to the role of NGOs and various departments in creating quality tourism products in the Islands. Smt. Chowdhury emphasised that tourism has to depend on various other sectors for development, hence it is important that all the departments contribute evenly for tourism development. She also reviewed the developments in the fisheries, agriculture, housing and other sectors. The Hon’ble Minister suggested that in order to attract more high value tourists to the Islands, a green city campaign should be launched to keep Port Blair and the surroundings clean. While stressing that her Ministry would promote the Islands aggressively, she asked the Administration and the private sector players in tourismto do the needful on its part to make the Islands attractive as a niche destination. 

MOS inaugurates intermediate shelters in Teressa

Shri S. Regupathy, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Home Affairs visited Teressa Island on 8th April 2005. During the visit the Minister inaugurated the newly constructed intermediate shelters at Bengali village and handed over possession of such shelters to 88 families in the presence of Shri D. S. Negi, Chief Secretary, A & N Administration, Shri A. Anbarasu, Deputy Commissioner (Nicobar) and other officials. The Minister met the Captain and villagers and enquired about relief provided to them by the Administration. The Minister visited the Chowra camp. He also visited the PHC and the affected harbour area. The Minister suggested for undertaking immediate construction of PHC at a new and safe place.

Power facility to intermediate shelters at Teressa

The facility of power supply was extended to Alurong village on April 9, 2005. The Special Relief Officer, Teressa, Shri Shanti Behari, inaugurated the power supply in the presence of the First Captain, Shri William and other officials. With this the occupants of the intermediate shelters are getting power supply for twelve hours from 5 PM to 5 AM daily. Supply of power comes from recently commissioned genset of the Electricity Department. The Captain and villagers expressed their gratitude to the Administration for extending the facility of electricity to them.

Closure of road

 

The road from Goalghar Junction to Secretariat Junction will remain closed for all vehicular traffic w.e.f 12.04.2005 (6.00 AM) to 13.04.2005 (6.00 AM) due to resurfacing of the road.

 

Donation to LG’s Relief Fund

 

The Chairman, Shri GC Khattar alongwith Shri RK Shami, Committee Member and Shri J. Immanuel Koilraj, Honorary Secretary, Institution of Engineers Local Centre, Port Blair, contributed a sum of Rs. 25, 000/- on behalf of the Institution of Engineers Local Centre, Port Blair to the Lt. Governor’s Relief Fund for the benefit of earthquake/tsunami affected persons of A & N Islands.

Distribution of Kerosene

 

It is for the information of Family Identity Card/Ration Card holders as well as Fair Price Shop owners that consequent on the stagnation in distribution of SKO, the Govt. of India, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, New Delhi has allocated additional quota to the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands due to Tsunami disaster.

 

The Directorate of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs have decided to continue the scale of distribution of SKO upto July, 2005. The Family Identity Card/Ration Card holders of this Union Territory are entitled to draw S.K.O as per the following scale from their respective Fair Price Shops.
