Volcano continues to emit smoke
The Hon’ble Lt. Governor, Prof. Ram Kapse, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Shri Manoranjan Bhakta and the Chief Secretary, Shri D.S. Negi made an aerial recce today of Barren Island, the only active volcano in India. They were also accompanied by few journalists. Situated about 140 KM from Port Blair, fresh eruptions were reported on May 28, 2005. It continues to emit smoke and lava but lava was not flowing into the sea. Therefore, there appears to be no damage to the eco-system around the Island so far.
Earlier a team of journalists witnessed the volcanic activity from aboard a Coast Guard vessel CGS Sagar on June 2, 2005.
The island, an uninhabited one with a diameter of about 3 KM, and an area of 8 sq. kms, is accessible only by ships. The volcano was dormant since last few years and there was no volcanic activity even after the earthquake and tsunami of December 26, 2004.
The Barren Island volcano erupted twice in recent past, once in 1991 and again in 1994-95, after remaining dormant for about 107 years.
The volcano is located on Barren Island at 12 16.8’ North Latitude and 93 50.8’ East Longitude.
The A & N Administration is exploring possibility of organising journey by sea for tourists and others to witness the event in view of the interest generated by the activity.
