The Andaman & Nicobar Islands have vast potential for fisheries development in view of its Coastal length of about 1,962 km and Continental shelf area of 35,000 Sq Km. The Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around this islands is about 6,00,000 Sq Km with an estimated Fishery potential is 1.48 lakh MT which is 3.8% of our Country’s total Fishery Potential. For augmentation of Fish production and to harvest the untapped fishery resources without effecting the fragile ecosystem, the Department of Fisheries, A & N Administration is implementing Various schemes/programmes.

The
production of freshwater fish from the inland waters is 90 tonnes
per year. The fresh water resources and the scope for inland fisheries
development is limited in the Islands, due to the absence of major
riverine systems or large water bodies. The estimated area for fresh water fish culture in the Andaman District is about 91 Hectares. However there is scope for creation of small check dams in the slopes of the hills. The department produce adequate quantity of fish seed in its hatchery and supply to the pisciculturists.
Mariculture and Brackishwater Aquaculture
Mariculture
and brackish water aquaculture are totally non-existent in Andaman
and Nicobar Islands. It is known that fish / prawn seed, particularly
of mullets, chanos. Prawn species such as Penaeus monodon and P.
merguiensis are available in the mangrove areas. The resources
could be utilised for increasing the production.
