About Lime Stone:

The limestone caves are a popular Tourist destination in A & N Islands and for the tourist, the visit to A & N is incomplete without visiting these caves. These naturally formed caves are unique in the country as they are located very close to the sea coast. The travel route from Port Blair to the limestone caves passes through a stretch of “Reserved Forest” area, with dense forest cover and no habitations. The route also passes through rural habitations outside the reserved forest area, where tropical rain forests are in abundance.

The Limestone caves are situated in North & Middle Andaman district of A & N Islands. The nearest town is “Baratang”, which is at a distance of around 100 Km from Port Blair, the capital city of A & N Islands. Baratang is a small town situated on Andaman Trunk Road (ATR) which is the only roadway connecting North & Middle Andaman District with Port Blair. However, to reach Baratang, one has to cross the sea at the place called “Middle Strait” which is directly connected by road to Port Blair. For a quick view of the route, see the “Route Map” link in this website.

How to Reach

The Limestone caves can be reached from Port Blair by a combination of two travel ways as below, that is majority way by Road and rest by Sea. See Map link in this website, for an easy understanding of this route :

  1. Road travel - Vehicles (Buses and Cars) travel North from Port Blair to Middle Strait which takes around 4 Hours. Middle Strait is on the sea coast and Baratang is in opposite side of the sea coast. So, at Middle Strait, tourists get down from vehicle and board a Ship to carry them to Baratang which takes just 10 minutes. At Baratang, tourists get down from ship and approach the counter established at District Forest Office (DFO), Baratang, in close proximity to Sea coast. The permits to visit Limestone caves are issued at this counter. The permits carry details of Boats which will take Tourists to Limestone caves.
  2. Sea Travel – Tourists board the Motor boats at Baratang and travel to the Limestone caves, which takes around 30 minutes and return back to Baratang by same Boat.
