The major thrust of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services is on working towards control of animal diseases, creation of disease free zones, scientific management and up gradation of genetic resources, increasing availability of nutritious feed and fodder, motivating farmers/unemployed persons for self employment and higher subsidiary income through Animal Husbandry activities resulting in enhanced production of eggs, meat and milk and providing marketing facilities to the farmers for sale of livestock products.
 
DISEASE STATUS
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are free from most of the infectious and contagious diseases of Livestock. Except for two incidences of Foot and Mouth diseases in 1985 and 1989 and two incidents of Swine Fever in 1967 and other in 1987, no other out break of infectious and contagious disease has been reported so far on livestock of this territory.
 
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
 Up gradation of three Veterinary Sub-dispensaries in to Veterinary Dispensary.
  Establishment of 7 Nos new VSDs in remote places for providing veterinary health care to the farmers.
 Conduct of 5026 Nos. Veterinary camps/infertility camps/A. I campaign etc. at the doorstep of the farmers.
  A total of 515 Nos. tribal families were assisted by providing poultry, piggery, goatery etc under subsidy      Programmes.
 Altogether 25806 Artificial Insemination were performed on Cows/Buffaloes out of which 8225 calf were born.
 Castration was performed on 17616 Cows/Buffaloes.
 Under the Poultry Dev. Programme apart from services such as debeaking, Vaccination etc., other technical     services a day old chicks of broiler and layer birds were supplied. A new programme of supplying improved     variety of backyard poultry with Giri Rani/ Vanaraja birds were taken up.
 Development of grazing land in 39 Panchayats.
 Training provided to 88 part time volunteers on A.I and Castration for engaging them in the remotest of     areas.
 
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS DURING ANNUAL PLAN 2002-03 
 Establishment of 2 Nos. Veterinary Sub-dispensaries. 
 10 Nos progressive farmers deputed to mainland.  
 Conducted 543 Nos. Veterinary camps/infertility camps/A.1 campaign etc. at the doorstep of the farmers.
 Training provided to 18 part time volunteers on A.I and Castration for engaging them in the remotest of      areas. 
 Artificial Insemination was done to 7518 Cows/Buffaloes out of which 2630 Calf were born. 
 Castration was performed on 4241 Cows/ Buffaloes. 
 Milk production reached 25,620 MT and egg production was 565.85 lakh Nos. during the year. 
 A total of 62741 Nos. day old chicks were supplied to the farmers form the departmental farms. 
 A total of 165 Nos. tribal families were assisted by providing poultry, piggery, Goatery etc. on subsidy.
