LG inaugurates Island Tourism Festival
The Lt. Governor, Lt Gen (R) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM inaugurated the 15-day cultural extravaganza-Island Tourism Festival (ITF)-2008-09. The Lt. Governor also released a Souvenir and Tourist Booklet to mark the occasion. The First Lady of these Islands, Smt Bhawanee Singh and the former Lt. Governor of these islands, Lt. Gen (Retd) R S Dayal also graced the inaugural function.
Organized under the aegis of Tourism Department of the A&N Administration at the exhibition ground located at VIP Road, Port Blair, the festival showcases the different developmental activities of the A&N Administration in various fields besides cultural programmes by artistes from mainland as well as local orchestras.
Inaugurating the big event, Lt. Governor said that the tourism festival is the most famous festival and has crossed the Islands frontiers and attracts thousands of people from all over the country. However, as mark of respect to all those who were killed in the recent terrorist attack in Mumbai, this year's celebration has been kept low. He further said the Administration and Tourism Department, which is engaged in promoting tourism in a big way, have prepared a road map to tap the tremendous tourism potential. Accordingly, an eco-friendly tourism policy has been prepared, which has even been put in the website of A&N Islands seeking public comments and suggestion.
Tourism here, the Lt. Governor said, is being developed in such a manner that besides high class tourists, those hailing from every class of the society can afford to visit the Islands. Besides, it will generate revenue and employment for the Islanders. He further emphasized on the need for organizing students exchange programmes, which, he felt, will help bridge the gap between people from mainland and Islands.
